Overall I found that the target audience for Bauer media's magazines are middle class 25- 45-year-old females with interests in health, beauty and fashion. The mission for all of them is to engage their audience in an escapist magazine to allow them to relieve themselves from the real world and take a break from responsibilities and home life. They all go against the patriarchy and typical gender roles of women and try to free them from the oppression of men and society.
I believe The magazines that I have studied make people believe that the word 'fashion' means whatever the latest singers, idols and stars are being paid to wear in their magazine covers. I think this because in all of the magazine covers I studied apart from the weekly magazine they presented a star wearing some new flashy clothes, all chosen by the photographer or magazine writer. My own interpretation of the word 'fashion' is whatever I feel good in, doesn't matter if it's from 1988 or any age, as long as you like it, it's fashion.
From studying the magazines that Bauer produce and a few other magazines, the target audience of 25-45 year olds is targeted by the media by using new and current stars. The amount of fashion magazines out there means that there's a very big battle between each and everyone, this means that each magazine has to come up with a new idea to bring in the readers without losing them. so most magazines talk about a new, unheard of issue in the world, such as all the different pubs and how to be an adult binger (analysed magazines).
In my research I have learnt that Van Zoonen's theory of how the media portrays men and women is no longer fully correct as we're in a postmodern era where women are being freed from the oppression of men and the media. This will help me in the making of my own magazine cover because it tells me I have to portray women with power in order to create an accurate magazine cover for Bauer Media.
In my magazine covers I intend to create a female fashion cover with a group of females and another cover with Asian, heavily religious female to try and show the different representations that I have found in my previous research and to show the different religious attitudes of the groups. The white female one will be presented as powerful and in a non patriarchal society and the Asian female will be presented in here religious clothes near a British history monument to show how her culture will always be the most important to her and nothing can take that away from her. I will use a single coloured background for the white women's magazine to show how the woman's life can is a blank canvas that can be changed by anything and there are endless opportunities for women, and the Asian women's will be in front of a British monument to show culture and identity. There will also be a smaller picture advertising a second brand where the backgrounds swap between the two social groups. The costumes for the white females will be a bright and empowering dress which juxtaposes the background to really make her stand out and be the only thing that's important on the cover, the dress will show little amounts skin to avoid being sexualised and Laura Mulvey's theory of the male gaze cannot take effect. The Asian woman's outfit will be something that has a strong cultural significance to really emphasis her culture and Identity. These models will be of the same age range of the target audience to really appeal to them and promote the feeling of power and how they can do anything with their lives.
